Nuclear Batteries to Power 25,000 Homes For 5 years

Developed at Los Alamos National Laboratory, Hyperion Power Generation is promoting a new design for a small scale nuclear power system that's smaller than a hot tub, and doesn't even need technicians to run it. The plan is to simply bury them in the ground, hook them up to a steam generator and away they go...powering an entire small town for more than 5 years.

Even if it is a safe device, a lot of people are not going to want to have these in their neighborhoods. It's unfortunate that the United States can't seem to embrace nuclear power like Europe. I also wonder if this country's current war on terror furor would prevent a company from ever being allowed to spread this much nuclear material around, especially since it is so portable.
